I said it last time.

Wanna say ya goodbyes, tell them while it’s spring
I heard everybody’s dying in the summer, so pray to God for a little more spring

chance the rapper- “paranoia”

and we’ve just begun spring. what a way to make these things start.

I lost my uncle this past weekend. my father’s brother. of 13. I always say it’s too many to count, that I don’t have enough hands, and now it starts to seem like I don’t have enough love, enough feelings to go around. the hurt I feel for missing people. the guilt I harbor for lack of phone calls and visits. too many things that have been out of my control, but too many things that anger me all the same.

choices that other people, that adults could have made. choices that I could never change. I can only move forward. that’s what spring is right? rebirth. growth. becoming new again. shedding of skin. so many metaphors that feel utterly useless, worthless when you are fueled— consumed by the anger of the women that came before you, and those that will surely come after. the anger that propels us forward, to be better. to be better mothers, sisters, brothers, friends, than ours have been to us. it is the anger that makes me. that has always made me.

but, it is the fear that consumes me.

I am, and will always be, made of every person I have loved and that has loved me.

I wrote that on my heart when my grandmother died.

and not for the last time, never the last time, I have carved it there again. I will never be free of loss. nor will you. we are victims to our love, to our connections.

we can pray for more time as long as we want, it feels that it so rarely comes. and then the anger revisits us. the anger at god, at ourselves, at our families. and I am angry. but I feel so much love, so much sadness that my family will join for this occasion. the return to the earth, the sky. and I will not be there. life strikes again.

but my family will celebrate, will tell stories, will laugh. and that is all I could ever ask of this moment. and when I think of the cemeteries, of the headstones that bear my family name, I will remember that they are all together, and we will see each other again.

I leave you all with this, a story. what is close to my heart, what I will never forget. what I will etch into my skin as a reminder of the anger that fuels me. and the love that has settled that flame.
<div time, I was working and spent what felt like forever in Louisiana preparing for the funeral. a funeral in which I fell to my knees as soon as I saw my grandmother in her casket. literally, fell to the and my mother, who loves her privacy, everyone’s faces have been blurred. but anyway. my sister, in the middle, is a mother — almost twice over now. my nephew is a bright light in my life, and I know he’s everything and more to her. a woman who lost her mother. who grieves, in so many ways. I remember when I found out— I cried, of course. I poured tears in a shower I didn’t need to take because I knew my boyfriend at the time could not comfort me in any meaningful way. and what else could I do? I cried for a woman that wasn’t my mother. but she was a woman I knew, I loved. I wrote about mothers recently (on women and bad mothers), and I of course thought of the mothers in my life— their successes and failures. all of this to say, shortly, grieve. grief is constant. it may not always be as strong as the first time you learn a heartbreaking fact. “you’re handling this well”, my father said to me the night before we drove to Louisiana, when I was under the impression my grandma was in the hospital again. “what did he mean ‘handling this well’?” I asked my mom after the call ended. she started crying then I started crying. I felt the pain of what I knew to be true coursing through my body, a pain that I hope to never know again so soon. we celebrating my grandma’s life for days after the funeral. I got so drunk I vomited three times in one night. I got so drunk. so many days. my aunt and I, taking shots, mixing liquors, crying. because what else can you do? we still grieve. and we avoid the topic, painfully, because loving is losing. but it will forever be worth the pain.

ophelia.

Subscribe now

why aren't you friends with your neighbors?

I am growing to hate my apartment complex, not because of the place itself but the management.

vic

I am growing to hate my apartment complex, not because of the place itself but the management. That dislike is so burdensome as I previously loved the little place that I live. I spoke with my neighbors, waved when we passed each other and even had little chit chat from time to time. But now, as I reluctantly leave my home, my sanctuary, I don’t know my neighbors anymore. I wonder about them, as I see new faces and hear new voices.

But, everything has changed recently. I was on the way to bring gifts to a dear friend, who has now become a neighbor, I struck up a conversation with a woman. Merely asking if her AC was out, because mine was. And in that, she brought me into her life. She opened up a door, I fear I never would’ve opened myself. She’s older than me, not really by much, she’s in her 40s. But she calls me honey when I say hi to her on her patio, and she gave me a flower when she accidentally talked shit about me, to me. I’ve given her cookies, and she’s invited me inside. I’ve met her cat, discussed her daughter, and laughed about the snotty girl that lives upstairs.

The point is, in these uncertain times it’s so important to try and build community. And I’m trying, I’ve already planned my barter system with Sawyer, am trying to communicate more with people I deem friends—and spend time with them. It’s hard of course, especially in a world that was turned completely upside down by the necessity of being inside for over a year.

Tried to keep it short and sweet friends (and foes). Until next time… 60 days til summer.

thanks for the read, subscribe for more.
